Dog Owner's Manual

Read your dog, build the bond, and keep them safe, in plain English.

Your dog has been talking to you their whole life: the half-second eyebrow raise when you get home, the lip lick that means "I'm not okay," the sleep position that tells you exactly how safe they feel. This is the book that teaches you to listen.

A note from Ben

I'm not a vet, and I'm not a certified trainer. What I do is read the research, talk to the vets and trainers who do this for a living, and turn what they know into plain answers. When something in this book comes from a study, I name the study. When the honest answer is "that's a vet question," the book says that instead of guessing.

Most of us love our dogs and still miss most of what they're telling us. Not because we don't care. Because nobody ever showed us what to look for.

Every dog is talking. This is how you listen.

  • Seven hidden signs of pain
  • The senior dog: what changes mean

A few of the 30 behaviors the decoder table explains:

Plus 18 more, each with the likely meaning and when it's worth a vet call.

The honest math

Catching it early is the cheap part

A chocolate emergency at the vet, average insurance claimabout $1,100
A severe poisoning case with a multi-day hospital stay$3,000 and up
A missed growl that becomes a real problem, per behaviorist sessionhundreds
Knowing the signals, the toxic list on your fridge, and when to call$27

Typical US figures; pet insurers report chocolate-ingestion claims averaging about $1,100. Your vet, your dog and your area will vary. The point isn't fear, it's that the cheap moment to act is before any of this.

What this book does and doesn't promise

This book teaches you to understand your dog, not to train advanced obedience. It's written by a researcher and dog guy, not a vet, and it tells you to call a vet everywhere a vet is the right answer. It will not diagnose your dog or dose your dog, ever. If you've read the primary research on dog cognition yourself, you already know a good chunk of what's here. If you haven't, this is that research plus working-trainer wisdom, turned into things you can do at dinner, on walks, and at the front door tonight.

For you if

You're an everyday dog owner who wants to actually understand the dog on your couch. New owner starting right, or a longtime owner who suspects they've been missing things. (You have. Everyone is.)

Not for you if

You're looking for step-by-step obedience training, competition prep, breeder guidance, or veterinary treatment protocols.

FAQ

Fair questions

Is Ben a vet?

No. Ben reads the research and talks to vets and trainers, and the book never claims otherwise. Everywhere your dog's health is on the line, the book's answer is "here's what to watch, and here's when to call your vet."

What exactly arrives after I buy?

Two files, instantly: the PDF (128 pages, best on computer and for printing the cards) and the EPUB (large-print, best on phone or tablet, works on Kindle via Amazon's free Send to Kindle). You keep both forever, with free access to any updated versions.

Do I need any apps or subscriptions?

No. Any PDF reader or ebook app opens the files. Nothing expires.

Will this work for my breed or my older dog?

Yes. The signals in Parts 1 to 3 are dog-universal, and there's a full chapter on senior dogs. Where breeds genuinely differ (like exercise needs), the book says so.

Is checkout secure?

Yes. Payment runs through Gumroad's checkout with standard card encryption. We never see your card details.

What if I have a problem with the files?

All sales final. But if a technical problem stops you from opening the file, reply to your receipt and we'll make it right.
